Williston Varsity Volleyball took to the courts last Saturday hosting the Preseason Classic Tournament at the WHS gym.
Participating in the tournament were Williston, Newberry, Chiefland and Dixie County, all of which are district rivals.
The first match was between Newberry and Williston and in four games Williston fell to Newberry three games to one; 23-25, 25-20, 27-29 and 23-25. All three of Newberry’s wins were two point wins with the third game going to extra points.
Williston’s serving was spot on during the match as Darby Battle went 22 for 22 and Mary Domenico serving up 20 points out of 21 serves. In spite of great serving though, Williston fell into the losing bracket to face the loser of the second match between Chiefland and Dixie County.
Dixie County fell to Chiefland in three straight games 22-25,20-25 and 19-25 to match up against Williston in the third match of the day. Williston would prove victorious in this match winning 3 games to 2, 24-26, 25-17, 25-18, 23-25 and 15-12.
Williston senior Morgan Vanasco recorded five ace serves and 13 kills while senior Chelsea Dola recorded six kills. On the defensive side senior Jackie Hatcher led the team with five blocks.
Newberry went on to win the tournament beating Chiefland in five games 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 22-25 and 15-13. Two of the four matches went five games, and only Chiefland had a three game match win over Dixie County.
Williston head coach Kim Nivala said she is looking forward to a tough season.
“The district is very well balanced this year,” Nivala said, “as you can tell by how many matches went four and five games in the preseason opener. This year the district title is anyone’s to take.”
Williston began their regular season play Aug. 27 at home facing off against Meadowbrooke.
The first district game will be against pre-season classic champions Newberry on Aug. 29 at Newberry.
