Bronson High School's volleyball team was playing with a vengeance on its senior night last Thursday, but Williston held fast to spoil the party in five games, winning 23-25, 25-14, 18-25, 29-27, 15-11.
The Eagles came out on a roll, opening the match with inspired performances, led by Brittany Smith (five kills in Game 1) and Ashley Mickle (two big blocks) to take a 13-7 lead. The Red Devils battled back, narrowing the game to 18-15 with two aces from Katie Casperson. But Bronson held off to take the first game off a Williston service error.
The Red Devils coasted in Game two, battling back and forth to an 8-7 lead, but rolling off a 9-2 run to pull away at 19-9. Haley Beckham's kill gave Williston a 22-10 lead, and the Devils soon put the game away.
But Bronson came out to fight in Game 3. Down 4-2 early, the Eagles' Smith and Mickle led the squad to a 6-5 advantage. Williston kept it close, even tying the match at 9-9, but a big save from Smith sparked Bronson, who took control with two late aces from Smith and a Jasmine Parker kill to pull within one game of a victory over the Red Devils.
Williston wasn't done, as both teams set up for an epic Game 4. Neither team led by more than three points during the frame, with both fighting to a 25-25 tie. Williston's Katie Beckham forced the fifth game with her ace to give Williston the 29-27 win.
Bronson had some momentum in the final game, with Smith earning three kills to give the Eagles a 6-3 lead. Williston battled back to tie it at 7, and took the lead with two consecutive aces from Haley Beckham.
From there, Williston never looked back, capping the thrilling match with Tori Stamper's ace to seal the 15-11 win.
