For a year Williston Mayor Gerald Hethcoat has led the effort that would bring this year’s Levy County Veterans Day parade to our city.
Phone calls, e-mails, face-to-face conversations and a lot of work–and probably prayer and sleepless nights–paid off Monday when hundreds came to Williston to honor the men and women of our Armed Forces.
The mayor and his team, whose members span every city in the county and reaches into neighboring towns, are to be commended for putting together a parade and ceremony that not only paid tribute to our military personnel and emergency workers, but also showcased Williston at its best.
Scores of volunteers were on hand to line up parade participants, direct traffic, coordinate entertainment and cook and serve more than 500 hot dogs that were given to everyone who attended.
Grown men had tears in their eyes and many had lumps in their throats as Williston paused to say “thank you” on the day set aside to honor our veterans.
Thank you, Mayor Hethcoat and the city of Williston for doing it right.
