The Williston volleyball team fell to Cornerstone, 25-18, 25-14 and 25-13 on Tuesday night.
The Devils faced two big problems with the visitors, two girls who dominated at the net. Senior Melissa Gomes had 10 kills and four blocks to lead Cornerstone as she took charge on the front line. Her teammate, sophomore Michaele Mantel, also had 10 kills but was also used as a setter, getting 11 assists.
In the first game Williston took a 6-3 lead on the strength of serves from Taylor Acree, but Cornerstone tied it at 10-10. The visitors scored five straight behind the serve of Mantel, but Kene Mincey got the serve and the Devils scored six in a row, constantly putting the pressure on the visitors to make mistakes, with Mallary Brochetti getting the lone kill in the string.
But then Cornerstone caught fire and outscored the home team 10-2 the rest of the way.
In the second game Cornerstone pulled away steadily, with the big spurt a seven-point run to take a 20-11 lead. Laurrin Howard broke the run with a kill, but the Devils could get only one more point the rest of the way.
The third game started well, with Brochetti getting a kill after concentrating to hit the ball which went off the ceiling, and Kim Dobbins had two kills in a streak that saw Williston take a 5-4 lead. But Cornerstone scored six in a row behind the serve of Gomes, and then steadily pulled away again.
The remaining Devil points were scored on two kills each by Dobbins and Mincey and a block by Brochetti. Fittingly, Cornerstone closed it with an ace by Jessie Taylor.
Williston won the JV_match, 25-14 and 25-17.
