On Thursday night April 24, the Williston Red Devils faced the Union County Tigers for the District 7 1A Championship.

The game was controlled by Red Devil pitcher Trent Johnson as he overpowered the Tigers spreading 3 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 12 Tiger hitters, and walking none.

It was an overwhelming performance by the senior pitcher.

The game was knotted up 0-0 after three full innings of play as the big right handed pitcher had struck out the side in both the first and third innings.

The Tiger bats came alive in the top of the fourth inning as they put runners on first and second base with two singles. With two outs Johnson picked up his seventh strike out to end the inning keeping the Tigers scoreless.

Austin Langworthy led off the bottom of the fourth inning for the Red Devils with a double to left center field. Haydn Cano followed with another double for the Red Devils putting runners at second and third base.

Johnson then helped himself with a double scoring the two go ahead runs for the Red Devils. The Red Devils left a runner on as they took a 2-0 lead after four innings of play.

After his base hit put the Red Devils up 2-0 Johnson went to work in the fifth inning and again struck out the side.

The Red Devils failed to score in the bottom of the fifth but held onto their 2-0 lead.

The Tigers came to bat in the top of the sixth inning and Johnson recorded his 10th and 11th strike out of the game as the Tigers failed to score.

In the bottom of the sixth the Red Devils again scored one run following a Langworthy walk, a Cano single and Cameron Coffey laid down a perfectly placed bunt to load the bases. Johnson forced home a run following a force out at home plate and an overthrow allowing Cano to score from second base.

When the dust cleared to end the sixth inning, the Red Devils held a 3-0 lead, and were three outs from a District Championship. The Tigers went three up and out as Johnson picked up his 12th strikeout the Red Devils claimed the District Championship.

The Red Devils will have a week off before they host the Regional Semi-finals at the Devils Den on May 6. Game time is 7 PM.
