Mayor R. Gerald Hethcoat presented the first Student of the Month awards of the academic year at the City Council meeting on Sept. 2.
Morgan Williams, daughter of Donna Williams, is a fifth grader at Williston Elementary School. She was nominated by teacher Ms. Dubois, who said this: "Morgan shows respect to all students. She has a lot of patience and a friendly word for even the most distracting student. She quietly steps in to help students who don't or can't understand the work we are doing in class. She does this without looking for recognition or a reward. Her kindness and caring are an example to all.
Jace Colina, an eighth-grader at Williston Middle School, is the son of Juan and Angela Colina. The seventh grade team, who nominated Jace, said that "he is a polite young man and one who goes above the call of duty. He is a student that all the teachers enjoy having in their classes. Jace maintained a 4.0 GPA for his entire seventh-grade year. He is the type of student and young person who will be an outstanding citizen."
Matthew Laws, the son of Deborah Laws, is a tenth-grader at Williston High School and was nominated by Mike DeLucas, the principal there. Matthew is one of several sophomores with 4.0 grade point averages, and had a perfect score on the math FCAT last year. He has earned nine credits, while most sophomores have only six. He also plays JV football.
Each student received a personalized certificate of achievement and a gift certificate from King Munchie's Pizza.
