On Oct. 14, as the air in Fort White turned from warm to very cool, the same thing happened to the Williston Red Devil football team in the second half of a match up between two teams with identical 3-2 season records.
The game got under way as the warm sun drenched field spilled over to both teams’ defenses. Each team had three straight 3-and-out possessions as the defenses stood tall for both teams.
On the Red Devils’ fourth possession of the first quarter as the clock was running down, quarterback David Heinkel hooked up with a quick pass just over the line of scrimmage to Brandon Preston at the 50-yard line.
Preston then out ran the Indians defense for a 50-yard touchdown. Jorge Deciderio's kick gave the Red Devils the early 7-0 lead. The Indians took the ensuing kickoff and were facing a fourth down and 14 at the Red Devils 37-yard line as the first quarter ended.
As the second quarter got under way, the Indians threw on fourth down and the pass fell incomplete.
After several three and outs by both teams, the defenses continued to play strong. Fort White’s quarterback Andrew Baker hit Trey Phillips with a pass and run down to the Red Devils 1-yard line.
Soron Williams plunged in for the touchdown, and the PAT kick tied the game with 5:56 on the clock left in the first half. The Red Devils took the kickoff and went away from the pass and were forced to punt the football away.
With 25 seconds left in the first half of play, the Indians scored their second touchdown of the quarter. The PAT put the Indians up 14-7.
Heinkel ran wide to pass and was hit hard by two Fort White defenders with just 4 seconds left in the half and re-injuried his already heavily taped ankle. Heinkel was sidelined for the remainder of the game as the first half ended.
Williston took the second half kick off with Preston moving to quarterback. After three straight first down runs by Keith Neal, the Red Devils were in the red zone and driving for a score.
Preston then dropped back and found Damien Strange for a 15-yard touchdown pass. The PAT kick hit the left upright and fell no good leaving the score at 14-13 with the Indians holding the lead.
With 4:08 left in the third quarter, Baker found AJ Legree for an Indian touchdown. The good PAT lifted the Indians to a 21-13 lead.
The fourth quarter began with the Indians holding the slim 21-13 lead. The Red Devils fumbled the football on their first possession of the fourth quarter and the Indians recovered at the Red Devil 30-yard line.
Baker found Wesley Pitts for a 30 yard pass in the end zone and the Indians took a 28-13 lead following the good PAT. With just over eight minutes remaining in the game, the Indians passed their way down the field and in to the end zone to take a commanding 35-13 lead.
The Red Devils moved the ball following the kickoff and found themselves with a fourth down at the Indians 12-yard line. The pass attempt failed at the 3:45 mark left in the game as the Indians took over. Hoping to run out the clock, the Indians were forced to punt the ball after the Red Devil defense made three stops. The Indians punter couldn't find the handle on the snap and the Red Devils Tyus Williams fell on the muffed snap in the end zone. With the good kick by Deciderio the score stood at 35-20. The Red Devils attempted an on side kick but Fort White recovered the kickoff. The game ended two plays later.
The Indians improve their season record to 4-2 and the Red Devils are now at .500 at 3-3. The Red Devils next travel to winless Chiefland Friday.  Game time is 7:30 p.m.
