Williston Police Cpl. David Moss will be memorialized July 30 at 10 a.m. when a portion of a Williston street is dedicated to him.
On July 30, 1988 at 2:09 a.m., Moss was working the night shift when he reported that he would be out of his car investigating a suspicious vehicle that he discovered.
This is the last time that Moss would be heard from.
Moss exited his patrol car and started searching the area for the occupant(s) of the suspicious vehicle.
Moss did not know that a 19-year-old with a stolen handgun was about to take his life. The suspect was hiding in some tall weeds behind a building. When Moss walked into range, the suspect fired one shot killing the young officer. Prior to Moss succumbing to his wounds, he shot and killed the suspect.
Earlier this year Rep. Charlie Stone was able to navigate legislation to have Noble Avenue (US-27) from Main Street west to N.W. 7 Street designated in memory of Moss.
During the ceremony the sign dedicating the road will be unveiled by Lori Moss, the widow of the slain officer, and Stone. The ceremony will take place at the corner of Noble Avenue and Main Street.
