91-year drought ends with championship

By Steve Jarboe

There are some avid Red Devil Sports fans who say it's been 91 years, and some say 92 years, since a Williston Red Devil Sports team has won a State Championship in any sport.

So checking my math that goes back to 1922 or 1923 when the Red Devil Baseball team brought home the title of State Champions.

The Red Devils have come close in recent memory, as the 2010 Boys Basketball team led by Issac Floyd and Deonte Welch made it to the final four, before falling short. In 2006 the Lady Red Devil Softball team behind the outstanding pitching of Roxxane Rawls made it to the State Final game before falling short.

Most of the Red Devil teams in the 1980s and 1990s were competing in the 2A, 3A, and even the 4A Classification. Always against much larger schools. But now, Williston High School with around 550 students is in the 1A classification where they should have been for many years.
The wait is over. The Williston Red Devils are the 2014 1A State Baseball Champions.
The game got underway with Trent Johnson taking the mound for the Red Devils.
In the first four innings, both Chipley and Williston left runners on base in each inning.
The Chipley Tigers started the fourth inning loading the bases with no outs. But the big right handed pitcher for the Red Devils went to work and got a foul pop-up for the first out, then struck the next two batters out.
With the score still knotted at 0-0, the Red Devils came up to bat in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Haydn Cano led off with a single. Kevin Coffey followed with a single. On a wild pitch the runners advanced to  second and third bases.
Trent Johnson then helped himself as he ripped a double to center field scoring both Cano and Coffey. Dalton Spikes laid down a perfect bunt and runners were safe at 1st and 3ed base. Jared Carson laid down a sacrifice bunt scoring another Red Devil run for a 3-0 lead.
Tey Hammond drove in the fourth Red Devil run with a grounder up the middle.
Just six outs away from the win, Johnson went to work again and the third out came on a ground ball to third baseman Tyler Moore.
The Red Devils came up to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning where Austin Langworthy blasted a one out double. The Red Devils could not add to their lead as the sixth inning ended.
Just three outs away from the Class 1A State Championship, Johnson went to the mound to finish his task  for the Red Devils and all the Williston community.
The Chipley batters went down 1, 2, 3, and the 91 year wait is over.
This 2014 Williston Red Devil Baseball team, brought the trophy to Williston.
A tribute to not only the outstanding young men on the team, but the outstanding job by Scott Hall and his coaching staff.
After all the years of covering Red Devil sports, I am over joyed to finally be able to write, Williston Red Devils, STATE CHAMPS.
