A barbecue and memorial dedication will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Williston High School softball field adjacent to Williston Elementary School.

The 2 p.m. memorial event, preceded by a noon barbecue, honors Ann Williams-Planas, who graduated from Williston High School in 1988, played college ball at Nicholls State in Louisiana and pitched for a women's team in professional baseball.

She was enshrined in the Women in Baseball wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., where she donated her bat, glove and jerseys.

Planas had died of melanoma after rejecting chemotherapy because of her unborn child.

The barbecue will feature barbecued pork, roll, two sides and a drink. Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children.

Tickets can be purchased at the dedication or in advance from any member of the Williston High School softball team or Booster Club member, Perkins State Bank, GMAC Realty or the concession stand at any home game.
