The Williston Lady Red Devils soccer team was defeated by P.K. Yonge 8-0 on Tuesday night at P.K. Yonge, thus eliminating them from the district tournament. The match was played in blustery cold weather, but the game play was full of intense action.
The first part of the game saw the ball traded back and fourth between the teams. Abby Rodriguez, Suzie Smith and Lucia Bernal were active on defense trying to keep the talented P.K. squad off the scoreboard, but about mid-way through the first half, P.K. Yonge struck with a goal. Minutes later, P.K. struck again and continued to score until it was 6-0 at the half.
Lady Wave midfielder Kelli McCrery (committed to Florida International University) was unstoppable. She had six goals and two assists for the game. But Williston went down punching, with a solo attack by Chelsie Wright ending with a near-miss shot on goal, and with Suzie Smith also taking a shot on goal, saved by the keeper.
Williston Head Coach Max Aguirre said "We played with heart, but we got beat by the better team," adding, "We have a real young team that will be one of the best in the district next year." Aguirre said he was really proud of the way his team played and that he was looking forward to working with his team in the off-season so they will come back better and stronger next year.
