It is believed that a mandatory dress code plays a valuable role in contributing to the positive atmosphere of a school and helps to set an appropriate tone in the school environment. A mandatory dress code is a symbol of a student’s pride in himself/herself and an outward sign of association with a particular school. Many experts in this field encourage schools to have a uniform as it can instill pride; support positive behavior and discipline; encourage identity with, and support for, school culture; ensure pupils of all races and backgrounds feel welcome; protect children from social pressures to dress in a particular way; and nurture cohesion and promote good relations between different groups of pupils.

Above all, many schools believe that a mandatory dress code supports effective teaching and learning. As a concerned parent of children at Joyce Bullock Elementary, I am encouraging our school leaders to implement a mandatory dress code. I am suggesting khaki bottoms and a solid color (red) Polo style shirt along with closed toe shoes (tennis shoes). Many steps must be taken for this to occur. The first step is to hold an informative open forum for the community. I encourage you to make plans to attend this forum. All parents and community members are invited, whether you support or oppose the idea. It will be held Monday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria at Joyce Bullock. Please mark your calendar and come with questions and ideas.
