The skill and athleticism is there, and Halloween is over, but something seems to always haunt the Williston Red Devils when they take on the Dixie County Bears.
This year was no different, as the Red Devils fought back to answer the Bears in the first half  to tie the game at 7-7 in the first quarter on a Brandon Preston 36-yard touchdown run.
As the second quarter got under way, both teams stopped themselves with turnovers and penalties. The Bears were whistled for 4 face mask penalties in the tightly contested and hard hitting first half.
The Bears started their third drive of the second quarter with just under five minutes remaining until half time. Javonta Jones broke loose for a 41 yard touchdown run. The extra point kick by Zack Cassidy put the Bears up 14-7.
Following the ensuing kick off quarterback David Heinkel broke off a nifty 45-yard run that ended with an additional 15- yard face mask penalty called on the Bears.
With a first and goal Preston again scored for the Red Devils on a 1-yard run. Jorge Deciderio shank-ed the extra point kick to the left, leaving the Bears with a slim 1 point lead at 14-13.
The Red Devils defense stepped up big as the Red Devils forced a Bears punt deep in their own end of the field. The Red Devils took over with just over a minute remaining in the first half. Heinkel found Preston with a nice pass down to the Bears 18 yard line. Heinkel spiked the football to stop the clock with just 10 seconds remaining. Deciderio redeemed himself as he booted a 24 yard field goal to put the Red Devils up 16-14 as the first half ended.
As the second half got underway it was more of the same for both teams, three downs and punt. With just over four minutes on the third quarter clock, Red Devil Damien Strange returned the Bears punt 83 yards for a touchdown. Heinkel then found Strange in the end zone for the 2-point PAT, giving the Red Devils a 24-14 lead, as the third quarter ended.
The Bears began a drive that carried over to the fourth and final quarter.
With 10 minutes remaining in the game the Bears Quarterback connected with Duke Dawson for an 11 yard touchdown pass. The PAT by Cassidy pulled the Bears to within three points at 24-21.
The Red Devils, hoping to answer the Bears score went to the air again. This time the Bears intercepted the football with just under eight minutes remaining in the game.
Driving to the Red Devil 6 yard line, the Bears were faced with a third and 1. Following a timeout, the Bears picked up the first down at the Red Devils 4-yard line with just under four minutes remaining.
On the next play from scrimmage Jones, swept the left end for the go ahead touchdown. The PAT kick by Cassidy put the Bears out in front 28-24.
After watching their 10 point lead slide away, the Red Devils were unable to score as time ran out. The Red Devils fall to 4-5 on the season with one regular season game left on their schedule.
The Red Devils will host the Dunnellon Tigers Friday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. This will also be Senior Night for the Red Devils.
