Following the holidays and a rough couple of tournament games, the Williston varsity boy’s basketball team took the win over district foe Newberry 63-47 Tuesday night Jan. 4, at the Williston gym.
The Red Devils looked like a team on a mission as they jumped out to an early 8-0 lead before the Panthers found the basket.
The Red Devils were led by sophomore Tre Wilson with 14 first half points as the Red Devils went up and down the floor the entire first half. The Red Devils held a 41-22 lead at the half time break.
The second half saw both teams cool down as the Red Devils went just under four minutes in the third quarter before finding the basket for points. The Panthers could manage just 11 points in each of the first three quarters as the Red Devil defense played a big part of the low scoring Panthers. Poor shooting and missing wide open lay ups didn’t help the Panthers pull the score any closer.
Red Devil Coach Steve Faulkner, played all his players in both the first and second halves of the game.
“We played Williston basketball in the first half and I was pleased with that, but it is going to take a full 32 minutes of play next Friday at Santa Fe,” Faulkner said following the game.
Faulkner was referring to the Red Devils next game at district opponent Santa Fe. The Red Devils and the Raiders are tied atop the regular season district standings. Both teams are 3-0 and this will be an important game for the Red Devils.
Wilson led the Red Devils with 14 points, Paul King had 11 points, and Jacques Edwards added 9 points.
Chris Gillyard led all players with 21 points for the Panthers.
The Santa Fe game is at Santa Fe Friday Jan. 7, with a 7:30 pm start time.
In earlier game action, the Williston JV team downed the Newberry JV team 67-43.
David Heinkel (13 points) and Earl Brown (12 points) led the Red Devil JV team for the win.
