It was a run and gun, basket trading, wide open game between 5A defending State Champion Gainesville High School and the 3A Williston Red Devils coming off a trip to the Final Four last season.
With several Gainesville players still on the football team going to the playoffs against Tarpon Springs, and four Williston players playing in a football Bowl Game at West Nassau one would not expect both teams to score in the 80s. But that is just what happened on Thursday night, Nov. 18, at the Gainesville Gym when the Hurricanes won 88-83.
Trailing 45-42 at half time, the Red Devils came out with a 31-point third quarter explosion, as Paul King bombed in four three point baskets and James Monroe had two, and Deterion Ross added one.
Matt Jackson carried the scoring load for the Hurricanes especially in the final quarter.
The Red Devils took a 73-68 lead into the final quarter, but were out scored 20-10 as the Red Devils seemed to run out of gas. The game was tied at 82-82 as the Hurricanes last 6 points of the game came from the foul line.
The Red Devils had trouble rebounding against their taller opponent, but stayed in the game with their aggressive defense.
For one three minute stretch in the third quarter, the teams exchanged three-point baskets on several back to back possessions. Jackson for the Hurricanes, and several Red Devil players bombed in the long shots.
Jackson led all players with 31 points for the Hurricanes. For the Red Devils it was James Monroe with 25 points, while Paul King had 19 points, Jaques Edwards had 15 points and Deterion Ross added 9 points and Stephen Brown had 8 points.
