After the Williston Red Devils sent the Union County Tigers out of the District Tournament on Friday night 47-40, and the Chiefland Indians knocked the Dixie County Bears out 47-44, the two winning teams were set for the District Championship game on Saturday night Feb. 8, in the Union County Gym.
The Red Devils and Indians met twice during the regular season with the Indians winning both games by the same three point margin.
In the District Championship match up the game went to double overtime as the Cheifland Indians held on for another 3-point win 52-49, winning the district Championship in double overtime.
However there is still hope for Red Devil fans.
As both teams advance to the Regional semifinals, there is a possibility that these two teams could meet again for a fourth time in a match up for the Regional Championship.
The Red Devils must go on the road to play Cresent City, as the Indians are home against Wildwood on Feb. 18, in their respective Regional Semifinal games.
If both teams can advance, they would face off again on Feb. 22, in the Regional Finals. The winner of this game will advance to the FHSAA Final Four in Lakeland, on Feb. 25.
Red Devils Coach Steve Faulkner said following the game, “ you just can't complain when you give up just 52 points in a double overtime game from a defensive point, but we just couldn't get baskets when we needed them down the stretch from our offense.” Hopefully we will get another chance to improve on our 0-3 effort against Chiefland.
