For the third straight year, the Williston Red Devils boys’ basketball team under Head Coach Steve Faulkner played their way to the regional final game.

Three years ago the Red Devils 2010 team went on to the Final 4.

Last year the 2011 team was stopped by Orlando Jones in the Regional Final and  this year the Red Devils faced the fifth largest private school by total enrollment in the state of Florida, Lake Highland Preparatory School.

The Highlanders came into the game with a 20-3 season record and had previously beaten the Red Devils in a non-district matchup early in the season.

Last week the 2012 Red Devils played an outstanding first half of basketball and the 4- for-4 shooting of 3-point baskets by Damien Strange and the five open layups by David Heinkel, kept the Red Devils in the game through out the first half.

Trailing 13-12 after the first quarter, the Red Devils played the Highlanders to a 35-35 tie at the half time break.

The second half got under way as the Highlanders made a quick 6-0 run before the Red Devils got off a shot at the basket.

The Red Devils, following a quick time out, managed to stop the Highlander run and pulled the score to 54-50 as the third quarter ended.

Jay Berry took the game over on offense for the Highlanders down the fourth quarter stretch with 12 of his game high 33 points.

The Red Devils were unable to overcome the second run by the Highlanders in the fourth and final quarter, as the Highlanders went on to win the game 75-62.

Denzel Davis was the only other Highlander with double digit points as he added 10 points.

Strange led the Red Devils with 20 points, and Deterion Ross had 14 points. Heinkel finished with 12 points and Tre Wilson had 10 points for the Red Devils.

Next week is the Final Four in Lakeland.
