With two non-district games left on the Red Devil varsity boys’ schedule, the team ended its regular season district play Saturday night at Santa Fe.
The Red Devils claimed the No. 2 spot for the upcoming district playoffs as they downed the Raiders 76-64 for the second place finish.
It was a big first quarter for the Red Devils’ David Heinkel after the Raiders pulled out to a quick 6-0 lead.
Heinkel drained two 3-point baskets, and a short jump shot to help propel the Red Devils to a 20-15 first quarter lead. Poor free throw shooting by the Red Devils kept the score close as they hit just two of six attempts in the first quarter.
The second quarter saw Damien Strange and Tre Wilson turn up the Red Devil offense and the defense led by Heinkel, Earl Brown, and Tyus Williams slowed the Raiders down.
The Red Devils jumped out to a 41-28 lead as the first half ended with the Raiders getting a last second 3-point basket by Montrell Flagg.
The Raiders were not ready to lay down in front of their home fans, as they were able to mount a short come back against the non starters that Coach Steve Faulkner went to early in the third quarter.
The Raiders behind Flagg and Demarious Harris managed to cut the Red Devil lead to 9 points as the third quarter ended 53-44.
The Red Devils started the fourth and final quarter with their starters back on the floor until the game was well in hand for the Red Devils as they rolled on to a 76-64 win.
Strange ended the game with 23 points, while Wilson had 14 points, and Heinkel added 13 points. Earl Brown had 11 points for the Red Devils. Flagg led all players with 26 points for the Santa Fe Raiders.
The Red Devils will play their final regular season game which will be their Senior Night game as they host North Marion on Friday Feb. 1. Game times are JV at 6 pm and the varsity game is at 7:30 pm.
