Just as the Williston Red Devils appear to be putting their offense and defense together, they now face a bye week before continuing their quest for a District Championship.
The Red Devils made the long journey down to Umatilla Friday night Oct. 8, to face an improving Bulldog team.
Had it not have been for a second quarter 24-yard field goal by the Bulldogs, the Red Devil defense would have come away with a shut out in their 43-3 district win.
While the Red Devil defense was recovering two fumbles, and intercepting four passes, the offense, with the return of starting quarterback DJ King was scoring with precession.
The Red Devils now 4-2 and 2-0 in district play, have been a slow starting team in just about every game this season.
King got the Red Devils on the score board following a missed field goal attempt by the Bulldogs, with an eight-yard run to the end zone. The extra point kick was wide right. The Red Devils were up 6-0 midway through the first quarter.
The Bulldogs’ offense began to click as they drove to the Red Devil 5-yard line as the first quarter ended. The Bulldogs were forced to try a 24-yard field goal. This time the kick was good to open the second quarter.
Holding a slim 6-3 lead, the Red Devils forced a fumble and drove the ball down to the Bulldogs’ 10-yard line.
Dontrell Edwards busted in for the score, and Brandon Preston put the two point conversion into the end zone for a 14-3 Red Devil lead with 7:28 showing on the second quarter clock.
Following the kick off, the Bulldogs went to the air again, and Red Devil Orvil Stone picked off the pass and returned it 40 yards for the second Red Devil touchdown of the quarter. Again the kick attempt was wide right, as the Red Devils held a 20-3 lead with 7:13 showing on the clock.
The Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs at the 50- yard line on their next possession, unable to connect on any passes.
The Red Devils quarterback King, hit Damien Strange for a 40-yard pass to the Bulldogs 10-yard line. Then it was Preston to the 6, Edwards to the 4, and on third down Edwards bulled his way into the end zone. Edwards also took the pitch from King and added the 2-point conversion. The Red Devils were now leading 28-3 with just over three minutes remaining in the first half.
The Bulldogs were held to a three and out and forced to punt the ball back to the Red Devils. The Red Devils committed their only offensive miscue of the first half with just under two minutes remaining in the first half. A fumble gave the ball to the Bulldogs at the Red Devil 27 yard line.
With time running out the Bulldogs attempted their third field goal try of the first half.
Red Devil James Hunt extended his arms and got the block.
The half ended with the Red Devils in the lead 28-3, and they had been playing their best game of the season on both sides of the ball.
Taking the opening kick off of the second half, the Red Devils fumbled the ball for their second turn over of the game. But it was just three plays later the Red Devils got another interception. The Red Devils were forced to punt the ball away, but got their third interception of a Bulldog pass with 23.1 seconds remaining in a scoreless third quarter. Edwards bulled his way for a 45 yard run to the Bulldogs 25 yard line as the clock ran out setting up the fourth quarter. Edwards then rambled through the middle breaking several tackles for a 16 yard touchdown run.
Kalen Penny swept right end for the 2-point conversion putting the Red Devils ahead 36-3.
With 9:58 remaining in the game, Red Devil Desmond Holmes grabbed the fourth interception for the Red Devil defense, as the Bulldogs continued to go to the air.
Running the clock down to 8 minutes, quarterback King, scrambled in for a nifty 22 yard touchdown. The extra point kick this time was good by Jody Louis. The Red Devils were now up 43-3.
The win put the Red Devils at 2-0 in district play. Following the bye week, the Red Devils will host District leader Trinity Catholic. The 6-0, 3-0 Celtics have dominated their previous opponents this season.
The game is Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m.
