Steve Faulkner begins second season with Red Devils

By Steve Jarboe

After leading a very talented 2009-2010 Red Devil basketball team to the State Final Four in his first season as the Head Coach of the Williston Red Devils, Steve Faulkner is again ready to take the helm of the 2010-2011 Red Devils.
Gone are the likes of Deonte Welch, Isaac Floyd, and Kelsey Coleman who played a big role in the Red Devils attack last season.
“These were three quality players and each had leadership qualities that is hard to replace,” said Faulkner.
“We have some very talented players this year, but so far we lack those leadership qualities that we lost to graduation.”
When asked about the keys to repeating another run at the State Title, Faulkner was quick to answer.
“Rebounding and more rebounding, will be the key to our success this season, and we need some players to step up and take that leadership role for us to be as good as we were last season,” Faulkner continued.
“We have a very small team height wise, but we have four guards who can shoot the basketball and we will continue to play pressure defense.
“When we lose a game, it will be because we get out rebounded,” Faulkner said.
“We will play a lot of kids in every game, and we have the talent through out this team to be successful. We just have to rebound the basketball at both ends of the floor,” Faulkner said.
The Red Devils will have eight or nine players returning to the varsity team who got a taste of Final Four action and the level of competition along the way.
“With the Santa Fe Raiders expected to be the District favorite, Suwannee is the sleeper and a much improved team in a very good District this season,” Faulkner said.
“We played some very good teams over the summer, and when we lost it was because we were out rebounded in each losing game, Faulkner said.
“Each  player to a man knows what it takes to win, and it would certainly be a Underachieving season if we failed to make the Playoffs, Faulkner said.
The varsity roster has yet to be completed as football players have yet to participate in a practice.
Todd (Pee Wee) Brown, will be coaching the Red Devil JV team this season.
Players to keep your eye on this season are the four guards, Jacques Edwards, James Monroe, Paul King, and Deterion Ross. Anchoring the front court will be James JJ Hunt and Tre Wilson.
Faulkner said, “We like to say we have six starters on this team.”
The Red Devils will be playing in several tournaments again this season where they have the opportunity to play some of the higher classification teams.
