A Williston High School senior is receiving a prepaid tuition scholarship from a local woman who had intended to provide the education to her late granddaughter. Samantha Lewis will attend the University of Florida and study business, advertising and communications.
Doris Young, who has had a stroke and is confined to a wheelchair, had purchased Florida pre-paid college educations for her grandchildren. However, one of those children, Sarah E. Adams, died in Pembroke Pines.
Her son, Mitchell Young, who has also moved here and whose son is a senior, said it took over a year to get the scholarship reassigned, something that isn't usually done.
He said they wanted to give back to the community because of the influence of Williston on his son.
Doris Young visited with Samantha last week at Williston High School.
The Levy County Schools Foundation helped in getting the scholarship reassigned.
