Thrown beer bottles followed by a car chase resulted in the arrest of two men on Sept. 1.

According to a report from the Levy County Sheriff's Office, a deputy responded to the area of State Road 121 and Northeast 20th Street shortly after 11 p.m. after a complaint of an occupant of a vehicle throwing beer bottles at a residence.

The deputy had been told that a white Chevrolet pickup with two men inside was being followed by a black Toyota pickup. The deputy says he observed the black pickup turn off 20th Street and onto SR 121 with the white pickup "approximately two feet behind." Both were traveling at a high rate of speed and the white pickup was so close to the rear of the black truck that the black truck could not stop at a stop sign.

The deputy stopped the white truck and made contact with the driver, Esteban Vasquez-Zarate, and the passenger, Wilfrido Garcia-Santiago, both of Williston. According to the report the driver presented an expired license. The deputy said he noticed 17 unopened beer bottles in the front seat between the driver and passenger, and both the driver and passenger had an open beer bottle.

The men in the Toyota said they saw someone from the white pickup throw a bottle at a residence on Southeast 5th Street in Williston and began to follow it. They said while they were following the truck the passenger leaned out the window and threw a bottle toward them. They said they stopped following the truck at Northeast 154th Avenue, but that the white pickup came up behind them and began following very closely, at which point the deputy came upon the scene.

Vasquez-Zarate, 28, of Northeast 128th Avenue, Williston Highlands, was charged with reckless driving and an expired driver's license. His bond was set at $3,500.

Garcia-Santiago was charged with throwing a deadly missile and obstruction by disguise, with a total bond of $7,500.
