Lady Red Devils rally to down Chiefland

It was all  Lady Indians for the first three quarters of play during last Friday’s game  when the Red Devils traveled to Chiefland. 

The Lady Red Devils continued to commit turnover after turnover as the Lady Indians took advantage and held a big lead at each stop of the first three quarters. 

The Lady Red Devils trailed 15-6 after one quarter, 27-12 at the halftime break and 40-28 after three quarters. The Lady Red Devils began to make their come back with five minutes remaining in the game and trailing 42-28. 

It was strong pressure defense and several 3-point baskets and the Lady Red Devils found they were down just 42-39 with just under two minutes remaining in the game. 

The pressure defense by the Lady Red Devils and poor foul shooting by the Lady Indians allowed the Lady Red Devils to take their first lead in the game at 43-42 as freshman Jill Edwards dropped in a 3-point basket for the Lady Red Devils with just two minutes remaining. 

The Lady Red Devils were forced to foul in the last minute and 10 seconds of the game. The Lady Indians managed to hit just two of 12 free throws down the stretch and the game ended in regulation time tied at 44-44. 

As the four minute overtime period got under way, it was all Lady Red Devils. Junior Hannah Coleman put the team on her back and scored nine unanswered points on two field goals and five of six free throws.

The Lady Indians continued to struggle both on offense and from the free throw line.

The Lady Red Devils outscored the Lady Indians 13-1 in the overtime period for the 57-45 come-from-behind-win. 

Coleman led all players with 21 points and Edwards ended with 14 points. Halie Hammonds led the Lady Indians with 15 points while Curtesha Yound added 12 points for the Lady Indians.

 

In earlier action the Williston JV  boys held back the Chiefland JV boys for a 42-35 win. 

 

Williston Varsity turns back Chiefland 68-57

In a non-district game played on Jan. 25, the Red Devils made the short trip to Chiefland to take on an improving Indian varsity basketball team.

After jumping out to a quick 9-0 lead, the Red Devils began to go to their bench in a game that the Red Devils hoped to be a warm up for their meeting with Santa Fe Jan. 26.

Playing their starters sparingly in the first two quarters, the Red Devils held a 17-8 lead after one quarter and continued to hold a 29-18 lead at the half.

As the third quarter got under way the Red Devils extended their lead to 36-18 before once again going to their bench. The Red Devils continued to hold a 53-36 lead after three quarters of play.

It was the big fourth quarter come back put on by the Indians that forced the Red Devils to put their starters back on the floor. 

At the five minute mark, Red Devil Head Coach Steve Faulkner called a time out saying his team was being out-played by the Indians, The Indians had cut the lead to just nine points with  five minutes remaining.

The whistles from the officials went silent under the Red Devils’ basket as several times the Red Devil players were crushed going for a layup. 

With the re-insertion of the starters, the Red Devils went on for a 68-57 win.

 Earl Brown led the Red Devils in scoring with his limited playing time with 23 points. Alex Porter had 14 points and Tre Wilson added 11 points. Austin Sheffield led the Indians with 14 points and Kyle Weeks added 12 points for the Indians. 

Chiefland postponed their boys’ Senior Night until this week.
