Crystal River 41 Williston 39
The Lady Pirates completed their sweep of the Williston girls with a narrow 41-39 victory on the Devils home floor. Early in the season the Pirates had defeated the Lady Devils 54-39. The Lady Devils led 11-8 in the first quarter on Senior night powered by senior Morgan Vanasco’s 4 points and sophomore Jill Edwards 5 points. Senior Hannah Coleman also put in a basket. The second quarter had Crystal River comeback to take a 19-16 halftime lead. The third quarter saw senior Deonna Hamilton lead the team with 5 points as the Lady Devils pulled to within one 29-28. Crystal River was able to hang onto their lead and win 41-39 in a hard fought win.
Scoring for Williston: Jill Edwards 9, Hannah Coleman, Deonna Hamilton, Shabree Porter, and Lakeria Wright all had 5, Danielle Dallas and Morgan Vanasco 4 and Precious Williams 2. Lakeria Wright led the team with 4 assists, Jill Edwards had 5 rebounds, Deonna Hamilton had 4 steals, and Brianna Monroe led the team with 2 blocks.
Hannah Coleman has played on the Williston varsity team for four years. She plans to attend college at Santa Fe College.
Deonna Hamilton has played five years of varsity basketball and started most of her games in grades 9-12. She was escorted by Greg and Denise Hamilton. She entered the Crystal River game with 447 career assists, 232 points, and 167 steals. Twice Deonna has led the greater Gainesville area in assists. She will graduate with honors and 46 college hours completed with plans to attend Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi in the fall. She plans to study Early Childhood Development.
Morgan Vanasco was a starter on the district champion volleyball team and has played varsity basketball for two years.
St. John’s Lutheran 64 Williston 52
The Saints opened up an 18-6 first quarter lead. They stretched the lead to 36-22 at halftime. In the third quarter the lead was 52-39 before finishing the game at 64-52. Four first half three pointers and red hot shooting allowed the Saints to defeat the Lady Devils in their only game of the season.
Scorers for the Lady Devils: Jill Edwards 11, Hannah Coleman 9, Danielle Dallas and Lakeria Wright 7, Brianna Monroe and Precious Williams 6, Deonna Hamilton and Shabree Porter 3.
Other leaders were Jill Edwards with 12 rebounds and Deonna Hamilton led the team with 7 assists and 3 steals.
Williston 48 North Marion 35
The Lady Devils ended their regular season on a high note defeating North Marion 48-35. This brought Williston’s record to 11-11 and leaves them with momentum as they host district play as a number two seed with a 6-2 record. They had a bye and played Newberry Tuesday night, a team they have beaten four times this season already.
The game was close in the first half with the first quarter ending 10-9 and keeping a slim halftime lead 20-19. The Lady Devils came out in the third period red hot, scoring 17 points often after breaking the press and scoring from point blank range. Taking a 37-28 lead into the 4th quarter they were able to finish the hosting North Marion team off 48-35.
Scorers for Williston: Brianna Monroe and Jill Edwards had 11, Danielle Dallas 8, Hannah Coleman 7, Lakeria Wright 4, Deonna Hamilton 3, and Shabree Porter and Precious Williams had 2, Shabree Porter had 9 rebounds and Jill Edwards and Brianna Monroe each added 8, Jill Edwards had 6 steals and Deonna Hamilton led the team with 7 assists.
