Lady Devils defeated by Lafayette in four game match

Last Thursday fans filled the Williston Gymnasium for a much anticipated match as Williston hosted two time Rural 1A state champs Lafayette (Mayo).

Williston gave the defending champs a run for their money as the largest margin of victory was in the third game which Williston won 25-18 with a seven point victory.

Lafayette won the first two games and the fourth by narrow margins with the largest point spread being four in game two, a 21-25 victory over Williston. The other two games went to extra points as Lafayette won each by a score of 25-27.

Lafayette over the last two seasons made it commonplace to win all their matches with out allowing the opponent to win even one game; sweeping every opponent they faced.

Notable players of the match were Morgan Vanasco who led the team with 15 kills and Shabree Porter who recorded 11. Darby Battle and Taylor Whilden lead the team in both defensive digs and serve receive percentage.

The Lady Red Devils will have a shot at redemption against Lafayette on Oct. 14 when they travel to Mayo.

With the season almost half over, Williston is still in contention for first place in the district as they played Newberry last Tuesday.

There are eight more games left in the regular season before the district tournament scheduled Oct. 21-22, 24, and Oct. 29-30 in Cross City.
