The Lady Red Devils hosted district rival Union County last Thursday which was a match up for the victor to emerge first place in the district. Both teams entered the match with one district loss apiece and with a win would earn first seed in the upcoming district tournament to be held in Cross City starting on Oct. 21.
Williston took game one by a score of 25-23 in a close fought battle. Union County came back in the second game with a 20-25 victory which turned out to be the only win they could muster against the Lady Red Devils. Williston won games three and four 25-14 and 25-18 and now is the stand alone first place team.
Jackie Hatcher, Chelsea Dola and Shabree Porter were like a wall at the net for Union County as all three shared in several blocks which seemed to take the wind right out of the Lady Tiger’s sails.
Williston continued their season of powerful kills and spectacular digs and saves to keep the vollies alive.
Morgan Vanasco, Hatcher and Porter lead the way in kills while Darby Battle, Megan Dixon and Taylor Whilden kept the Lady Devils in the game with saves and digs.
The match was dominated by Williston most of the way but at a few points in the match had to rally the troops and regroup before letting a game get away from them. Just as it has been throughout the season though, Coach Nivala was able to settle the team down and get them to focus on the win at hand.
Williston played Lafayette on Monday and will finish the regular season on the road facing Bronson before traveling to Dixie County to take their rightful first seed in the district tournament.
With a first place title in the District tournament Williston will advance to the Regional tournament scheduled for Nov. 5.
