Chiefland High School’s volleyball team outlasted a surging Williston this past Monday night, defeating the Red Devils in five games, 25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 22-25, 15-13.
The Indians were in control in the first game, rebounding from a 3-1 deficit to eventually take the lead at 12-11, thanks to two kills by Taylore Fuller. Chiefland expanded its lead to 18-13, holding out for the Game 1 win with a 5-3 run.
The Momentum continued in Game 2, with Chiefland jumping out to a quick 7-1 advantage. Williston pulled to within 11-9 with a kill from Rea Samuels, but the Indians rebounded to close the game on an 11-5 scoring run.
After that, the Devils made their move.
In Game 3 Williston took its first lead at 7-6 since Game 1, this time off another Samuels kill. From there, both teams flip-flopped with the lead, with neither team pulling ahead by more than three points, until Samuels’ tip over the net gave Williston the win.
The Red Devils continued their rally in Game 4, running up a quick 4-0 tally, pulling the lead to 10-5 off two kills from Haley Beckham and Samuels. Consistent play at the front kept Williston in charge throughout, and two kills each from Beckham and Morgan Vanasco forced a fifth-game duel.
Neither team wanted to give up, as again both teams jostled with the lead. A Fuller kill gave Chiefland some momentum at 13-9, and the Indians held off a brief Williston rally to take the match at 15-13.
