The Levy County Horse Club held its seventh annual Breast Cancer Awareness Benefit Trailride in October at Tidewater Trailhead in Goethe State Forest.

The money raised at these events are deposited into an account set up at the Shands Cancer Center in Gainesville to help local breast cancer patients. The funds are strictly regulated by a member board for patients in need of child care payments, gas money to attend the chemo treatments, wigs, combs, utility payment or one-time house or rental payment, everyday things that allow an individual to undergo treatment that otherwise would be available to them.

The club held its monthly meeting and Christmas party during the campout weekend of Dec. 14-16 at River Rise Horse Park at O'Leno State Park. As a result of the benefit Trailride that was held in October, a check for $3,200 was given to the Shands Cancer Center.

Accepting the check was clinical social worker Jennifer Mazza. A cancer patient recipient, Paula, was in attendance with Mazza and gave a heartfelt speech of appreciation of how these funds helped her and other patients through some really emotional and trying times during their treatments.

The 2008 benefit event will be held on Oct. 18 at Tidewater Trailhead on Highway 337 in Levy County. Anyone wishing to contribute or in need of further information about the horse club may contact it on the Web at www.flahorse.com/lchc or e-mail levy2@flahorse.com.
