On Tuesday night, some of the fans who made their way to the Red Devil Gym for the JV Volleyball match were surprised, there was no game. In a scheduling problem the Lady Mustangs JV failed to show for the match.

The varsity team for the Lady Mustangs however, did show up for the match against the Lady Red Devils.

The Lady Mustangs had to go to the five-game limit to outlast the Lady Red Devils. The scores were 25-20, 23-25, 25-11, 16-25, and 15-7 for the win.

Game one was a game of time outs. Each team would fall behind by 3-4 points, call time out, and come out of the time out with a 8 or 9 point run. The Lady Mustangs held on to take game one 25-20 off three game ending serves by Kaylee Thomas.

Game two saw the Lady Mustangs take a 4-0 lead before the Lady Devils fought back to tie the game at 4-4. Katie Casperson served five straight unreturned balls to put the Lady Devils up 9-5. The game was tied at 15-15  and again at 22-22, before the Lady Devils pulled out the win 25-23.

The Lady Mustangs put their game faces on as they started game three. The Lady Mustangs ran out to a 14-2 early lead off the serving of Bethany Mcbride. Mcbride had nine straight points scored from her serves as the Lady Devils had trouble getting the ball over the net.

The Lady Mustangs took game three of the match 25-11.

After falling behind in game four, the Lady Devils responded with a tremendous team effort, letting their fans know they were not finished yet. After pulling the game even at 9-9, the Lady Devils went on to a 25-16 win, sending the match to a fifth and deciding game.

The Lady Mustangs jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead in game five, and rode the play of Mcbride, Thomas, and Victoria Jones for the 15-7 win for the match.

The Lady Red Devils record stands at 5-3 and 3-3 in district play.

“We still have some growing to do with our young players,” said Coach Kim Nivala following the Lady Devils loss.

The Lady Devils travel to Bronson for a match Thursday, Oct. 7. Both the JV and Varsity will be playing.
