Take away six first half fumbles, four of which turned the ball over on substantial drives and the half time score would have certainly been a different story for the Red Devils season opener against PK Yonge last Friday night.
The Williston Red Devils were having their way with the much bigger Blue Wave players.
The Red Devils were moving the football down the field with Brandon Preston and David Heinkel breaking off big runs in the first quarter.
Heinkel slashed the Blue Wave defense for a 48-yard run to the Blue Wave 25-yard line, only to see the Red Devils fumble the football on the next play for the second drive ending turnover in the first quarter.
With the first quarter coming to an end, Preston broke loose for a 41-yard Red Devil touchdown, only to have it called back on a holding call.
The first quarter saw the Red Devil defense hold the Blue Wave to three straight four and outs.
The Red Devil defense stepped up with eight minutes left in the first half, recovering a Blue Wave fumble at their 12-yard line.
A quick 5-yard run by Coven Terrell to the 7-yard line and Preston swept the left side for the first score of the game. The PAT was missed and the Red Devils took a 6-0 lead.
Following the kick-off, the Blue Wave completed a 60-yard pass and run down to the 4-yard line.
Again the Red Devil defense rose up and held the Blue Wave to a four and out at the 4-yard line.
Taking over the football after a tremendous defensive stand, the Red Devils fumbled the football for the fifth time in the first half. This time it was in the end zone and the Blue Wave had their first score of the game.
The PAT was good giving PK a 7-6 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the first half.
The Red Devils took the ensuing kickoff and with 1:28 showing on the clock, fumbled the ball for the sixth time in the half.
The Blue Wave took over on their own 45-yard line. Taylor Roberts blasted through the middle for an untouched 55-yard run for the Blue Wave touchdown: the only play the Red Devil defense had given up the entire first half.
With the PAT good the Blue Wave took a surprising 14-6 lead into the halftime break.
The second half began like the first half for the Red Devil defense.
Taking the second half kick off the Red Devils Preston broke off a 14-and 12-yard run on the first two plays.
On their third play from scrimmage the Red Devils fumbled the football turning it over to the Blue Wave.
The Red Devil defense again held the Blue Wave to minus yardage and forced a quick four and out. The Red Devils blocked the punt and Keith Neal picked up the football, broke two tackles and raced 30 yards to the end zone. The two point try failed and the Blue Wave held a slim 14-12 lead with nine minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Following yet another strong defensive effort by the Red Devil defense, the Blue Wave was forced to punt from their own end zone.
The Red Devils Covin Terrell blocked his second Blue Wave punt attempt as the football flopped in the air.
An alert Tyus Williams caught the blocked football in the end zone for another Red Devil defense touchdown within three minutes off two straight blocked punts.
The two-point run by Preston gave the Red Devils a 20-14 lead with six minutes remaining in the third quarter.
The Blue Wave answered on their next possession as quarterback Fields hit Andre Smith with a 30-yard touchdown pass.
The PAT gave the Blue Wave a 21-20 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter.
The Red Devils offense came to life on their next possession as Preston again slashed the Blue Wave defense for 35 yards to the Blue Wave 17-yard line.
Heinkel took the next snap and scooted around the left end for a touchdown. The two-point run by Preston gave the Red Devils a 28-21 lead as the third quarter ended.
The Blue Wave, unable to move the ball against a stiff Red Devil defense, went to the air to begin the fourth quarter.
They moved the ball to the Red Devil 9- yard line.
Once more the Red Devil defense raised up to the job, as Red Devil safety Damien Strange, picked off the Blue Wave pass deep in the end zone, giving the Red Devils the ball out at the 20-yard line.
The Red Devils had to punt the football away with 6:30 left in the game.
The Blue Wave stayed with their passing game and went four and out. Preston broke through the Blue Wave defense again for a 45-yard run to the Blue Wave 24-yard line. Facing a fourth-and-three at the Blue Wave 20-yard line, the Red Devils were flagged for a delay of game penalty, putting the ball back to the 25-yard line and a fourth-and- eight.
The Red Devils failed to convert the first down and turned the football over on downs with 3:10 remaining in the game.
Staying with their air attack the Blue Wave Fields threw a perfect pass to Smith who was off to the end zone on a 75 yard pass and run play. The touchdown pulled the score to 28-27 with the Red Devils holding a one point lead.The two point pass over the middle was complete giving the Blue Wave a 29-28 lead with just ove two minutes remaining in the game. The Red Devils were unable to convert a score as time ran out.The Red Devils will be at home next week Friday September 9, as they host Crystal River. Game time is 7:30 pm.
