The veterans memorial will be a reality but before a monument or paver of any kind can be put in Heritage Park, there's much work that needs to be done.

Monday night, Ken Schwiebert, chairman of the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) presented his committee with a survey of the area that dates back several years when the memorial was a vision.

Committee members had a difficult time remembering what was discussed back then and for the most part started fresh with the preliminary plans that must be executed first, including sidewalks, streets and underground utilities.

Schweibert said he and John Olter, from the landscape architechtural firm of Michael Pape and Associates, will meet at the site this week, stake it off and see what's needed as far as irrigation is concerned.

The original plan called for Northwest Main Street to become one way, but the CRA is re-thinking it now. The sidewalk will also need to be moved to ensure it's continguous from the crossing past the pavilion.

The site will also needed to be leveled and will need to be done to allow future improvements beyond the memorial itself.
