Friday, Feb. 12

St John the Evangelist Church in Williston will hold a Southern Fish Fry Feb. 12 from 5-7 p.m . a the church on Hwy. 27, Chiefland.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children under 7 years old and are available at the door.

The mean consists of fish, french fries, cole slaw, hush puppies, grits, baked beans, dessert, coffee and tea.

Sunday, Feb. 14

Genealogy and History Society

The Levy County Genealogy and History Society will meet Sunday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Levy County Quilt Museum.

This month’s speaker will be member Myrtice Scarbarozi who will present a program on eligibility requirements for the Florida Pioneer Cetificate.

Saturday, Feb. 20

 ‘Cruzin’ for Kidz”

The Williston Elementary School Safety Patrols are hosting the Second Annual “Cruzin’ for Kidz” motorcycle ride on Saturday, Feb. 20 beginning at Williston Elementary School, 801 S. Main St. Registration 8:30-9:45; kickstands up at 10. Ride for free—Donations accepted. Lunch will be available for purchase upon the riders’ return to WES. Peanut Producers Meeting

The Florida Peanut Producers Association will host its 35th Annual Membership Meeting Thursday, Feb. 25 at the Jackson County Agriculture Center, 2741 Penn Avenue, Marianna. The theme this year is “Passport to Flavor and Fun” and we have an informative meeting planned. All peanut growers and spouses are invited to attend. Registration will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by the traditional smoked steak dinner.

Land Judging Event

The Tri County Land Judging Event for all FFA and 4-H members will be Feb. 26.

This contest is restricted to members of FFA or a 4-H club. The host this year is Levy County. The youth will meet behind the IFAS office in Bronson on Hwy 27-A.

Saturday, Feb. 27

FOL Hosts Cynthia Barnett

Cynthia Barnett , author of award-winning, Mirage, will present “Blue is the New Green: Water Sustainability and the Future of Florida” Saturday, Feb. 27 from 1-3 p.m. at the A.F. Knotts Library in Yankeetown, 11 56th Street.   

The Friends of A F Knotts Public Library, the Inglis/Yankeetown Woman’s Club, Withlacoochee Area Residents and the Inglis/Yankeetown Lion’s Club are sponsoring the event. 

Barnett will discuss facts from research for her forthcoming book, Blue is the New Green: An American Water Ethic, to be published by Beacon Press in 2011.

Mirage, was the Florida Book Awards 2009 Gold Medal winner for Best Nonfiction.  The St. Petersburg Times deemed Mirage one of “the top 10 books every Floridian should read.”

Sweetheart Dance

“Because they will always be your little one...”  Treat the special princess in your life to a night out with this special sweetheart dance.

Tickets are $15 per couple/$5 per additional child.  Ticket price includes a fun night of dancing, a photo of the sweetheart and her date, hors d’oeuvres, cookies and punch. 

A photographer will be on-site to capture memories from the night, additional pictures will be available starting at $5 each.  We will be at Williston Elementary School Cafetorium on Feb. 27, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in JBE library from Eva-Jean Watson or at WES from Darlene Hopping.

AARP Safe Driving Class

Florida is a mandated State for automobile insurance, therefore, an insurance company doing business in Florida is mandated to give a discount to those completing an AARP Driver Safety Course. Contact your agent for discount amounts. Take a refresher course to earn a discount good for three years. Enlist a friend to attend with you.

Wild Hog Canoe Race

Philpot Retirement

The Williston FFA Alumni and other friends are in the early stages of planning a retirement reception for Robert Philpot.

Philpot has been an Ag Teacher at Williston High School since 1973 and is retiring at the end of this school year. The reception has been planned for Saturday, May 15 at the Williston Middle School Cafetorium from 3-6 p.m.

Farmers’ Market

The Williston Lions Club will open their Farmers’ Market Friday and Saturday through December and hold Bingo every Friday at 7 p.m.

The club’s food concession is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. There is an indoor flea market, table spaces are available.

Levy County Farmers Market has fresh produce and plants. If you have something home grown or handmade, you are encouraged to participate. Call Erv at 875-7756.

Handy with a Needle?

Stitches from the Heart needs volunteers to knit, crochet or quilt blankets, sweaters and hats for babies in need. These items are donated to hospitals all over the country. Patterns are available. Donated yarn for seniors is available.
