Fun Run

Williston Elementary School will honor the memory of one of its own, third grade teacher Sherry Scott, who passed away last year from breast cancer. At this year’s Relay for Life, students from WES will gather at Booster Stadium at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 17, to be part of the “Tee-Gal” Kids Fun Run. “Tee-Gal” was Sherry Scott’s nickname.

Scott taught at WES for six years before her untimely death in the early summer of 2009. An able athlete, she had played high school softball and was an avid sports enthusiast. She was a mover and shaker on the school’s Positive Behavior System (PBS) committee.

“I knew we just had to do this for Sherry,” said physical education instructor Erin Owens. “Leading up to the run, we’re stressing a healthy lifestyle through proper diet and adequate exercise with our students.”

Students from Joyce Bullock Elementary School may sign up for a mile fun run as well.

WES is seeking community support to help with this event. Businesses or individuals may donate anything such as money or healthy snacks such as fruit. Volunteers will be needed to assist the day of the run. If any of these opportunities appeal to you, please contact Owens at 352.528.6030 or 316.5022.

Fishing Tourney

The annual “Catchin’ a Cure for Cancer” tournament is scheduled for April 24 at the Wacassassa Fishing Club.

This is the sixth year that a group of friends has banded together to form a Relay for Life team, with the fishing tournament as its major fund-raiser. All of the proceeds, which last year totaled more than $4,000, are donated to the American Cancer Society.

The tournament will be held from safe light until 4 p.m. on the 24th. The entry fee is $150, based on two men per boat. Each extra person costs $25.

The captain’s dinner and meeting is at 7 p.m. on April 23 at the Club. Those who cannot participate are invited to join the captains and crew and make their donations at the dinner.

There are three categories for cash prizes, which are based on the number of entries: largest redfish, largest trout and bag limit of one redfish and one trout. Entries must be weighed by 4 p.m.

This Relay for Life team has donated more than $20,000 in the six years of the tournament, and last year’s total was the top money earner in Williston’s Relay. They’d like to keep that streak going.

Entries may be mailed to Karlton Norton, PO Box 334, Williston, FL 32696, or you may contact him for further information at 352-538-5415.
