Alumni Games filled with entertainment

-A A +A

Saturday night saw the Williston Red Devil Gym heat up with many former Red Devil athletes who once played their hearts out for the home team.
This night was no different as both former Lady Red Devils and Red Devil men returned to the hard wood in two entertaining games.
In the first game between the 2011 and 2012 graduates taking on the 2008 and earlier graduates, it was a group of Lady Red Devils who still have the moves, the eye for the basket and the desire to play their hearts out for the Red Devil glory.
The Red team was made up of the 2011 and 2012 graduates, Cinnemon Robinson, Lateria Walker, Ericka Floyd, Erica Mason  and La’Asha McDonald.
The Black team was led by Margaret Brown, Kimberly Dobbins, Shereka Jackson, Chancie Jackson, Lenora Floyd and Angel Floyd.
As the game got under way, it was Erica Mason, Cinnemon Robinson and Ericka Floyd that provided the punch for the Red team as Robinson connected on three big 3-point baskets that powered the Red team to a 23-17 half time lead. After the Black team made a second half run that was led by the Jackcon ladies, and the Floyd ladies, Mason took control for the Red team as the game ended with a 47-40 victory for the 2012-2011 ladies.
Next on tap for the crowd, gathered to cheer on these Red Devil Alumni, was the introduction of the 2012-2013 Lady Varsity Red Devils.
Following the Alumni Ladies it was time for the Alumni men’s game. This was certainly a game that brought back a lot of memories to the fans that really got into the game, especially in the second half and the sparkling finish.
The Red shirt team was made up of most recent graduates: Paul King, Jacques Edwards, Tony James, Deterion Ross, DJ King, Tamarak Thompson, JJ Hunt, Stephen Brown and Brandon Preston.
The Black shirt team was elder alumni that included, Jerrell Hopkins, Timmy Cain, Marlon Brown, Capree Thomas, John Lowell, CJ James, Mario Brown, Antwon Floyd, Todd (Pee Wee) Brown, Coby Spann and Leon Brown.
Following a lot of friendly trash-talking by both sides, the game got under way. There were many notable changes on both teams as the game progressed. Todd Brown and Paul King can still drop in the 3-point basket. Marlon Brown can still motor and shoot the ball. Deterion Ross is still that smooth operator with the pure shot. John Lowell can still rebound along with Capree Thomas. Tony James can still jump and Jerrell Hopkins still has game.
The younger Red team took a commanding 32-11 lead as the first half ended in what looked like a blow-out was in the making. But once you have that Red Devil spirit, it stays with you for life.
Todd (Pee Wee) Brown opened up the second half with eight straight points before the Red team knew what was going on. The Black shirt team continued to put on a Red Devil- like run as they pulled the score to 58-56 with just 2:00 minutes on the clock.
Capree Thomas dropped in a lay up to tie the game at 58-58. Deterion Ross then drove to the basket and was fouled after making the basket. He put the Red shirt team up 63-60. On their next trip down the floor, Jerrell Hopkins tied the game with a big 3-point basket at 63-63 with 25 seconds on the clock. A Tony James jumper lifted the Red shirt team to a 66-63 lead. Thomas then dropped one of two free throws making it a 66-64 game. Ross then had a chance to put the game away for the Red shirt team but missed two free throws. With just six seconds on the clock, CJ James was fouled shooting a 3-point basket and was awarded three free throws with just one second on the clock. Making just one of three, the Red shirt team held on for a narrow 66-65 win.
All the proceeds from the Alumni Game go  to the basketball program at Williston High School.
