It's a new year and dozens of Levy County residents are planning to make it a healthier 2009 by participating in the 5,000-Pound Challenge.

Saturday scores of them showed up at Nature Coast Regional Hospital to kick off the 10-month program designed to foster healthy living through nutrition, exercise, smoking cessation and heart attack and stroke prevention.

Three families have been selected to receive additional help through the challenge and at the end of the year, the family that best exemplifies a healthier unit will win prizes including makeovers and haircuts.

The Evers' family from Inglis and the Aldridge family from Bronson were on hand Saturday to jump start the year with the Mardi Gras Walk and pick up tips from healthcare professionals in attendance. Participants are still encouraged to register by calling 486-3405 and monthly activities and events are planned to provide more inspiration to those who pick up the gauntlet and take the Challenge.
