‘Learn and Earn’ offers options

Workforce Connection’s new “Learn and Earn” program helps make hiring and training new employees affordable through subsidized on-the-job training and paid internships.

 The program kicks off Oct. 18 with an initial focus on professional and business services and law enforcement. Rolling enrollment continues through April 2011, targeting different industries or occupations each month. 

The second track, which starts Nov. 15, is geared for employers in the transportation, utilities, manufacturing and distribution industries.    

 Employers interested in hiring through Learn and Earn On-the-Job Training (OJT) may receive reimbursement of up to 90 percent of new employees’ wages while they’re being trained. 

The program may also cover costs for certification classes, equipment and clothing/uniforms as well as funds needed to conduct job and background checks.

 The Internship Program meets the needs of employers unable to commit to hiring.   Workforce Connection will pay interns an incentive of up to $400 weekly for a maximum of 40 hours per week. In exchange, employers provide interns with three months of work-based training. All interns will be adults ages 18 and older who have recently graduated from a Workforce-sponsored training program.

 Job candidates will be chosen from a pool of screened applicants who are unemployed or economically disadvantaged and who meet other Workforce eligibility criteria.
